After moving from India to England, Tomina knew she would need to retrain to continue her teaching career in a new country. Little did she know that she would pursue her qualifications, secure a job, and earn herself a rising star award in the workplace after just a year at the organisation.
In 2021, her journey started by enrolling onto the MSc Electrical Power and Energy Systems at Teesside University. A course which she graduated from in 2023.
Her prior experience in India saw her working as an associate professor for eight years, teaching a level 6 electrical engineering qualification to students aged 18 to 21.
In 2024, whilst looking for work, an electrical lecturer position became available at NETA Training. After successfully applying, her new teaching role started in September the same year.
The job required completing a teaching qualification at Stockton Riverside College alongside the role. The Certificate in Education (FES) is dedicated to building the skills and knowledge to work as a teacher in a further education environment.
This was a welcome opportunity to learn about working in a new culture and delivering to a younger audience. Tomina said: “The course has really helped me with managing the classroom changes, introducing new concepts without the students losing interest or getting bored.”
There was further added value in studying alongside work, as it offered an insight into techniques used by colleagues and peers. On her learning experience, she said: “Richard is always there when I need help, he makes sure he comes back to every single message. He is a great role model for me. Richard is a mentor and well-wisher who wants to see me work at a high level. He always praises me. He always encourages me.”
There is no doubt that Tomina deserves all the praise that she gets, as in December 2025, she picked up the Etc. Rising Star accolade at the annual staff awards, recognising her instant contribution to teaching at NETA.
